The word ‘Helios’ actually means ‘Sun’ in greek and is referred to as the name of a greek sun god in mythical beliefs. I called this image Helios because of the light of the sun leaking over the wave as if the wave was one of the horses that pulled the chariot of this light filled entity. The sun, being our source of light is the greatest collaborator we have as artists and photographers. It gives colour and dynamic shapes to everything we see. It doesn’t wait around for us to get the shot either so we must learn to work within its jurisdictions and time frames. This makes fleeting moments all the more beautiful, as we know that beauty is often only what it is because it doesn’t last and therefore becomes a limited and rare resource. I took this photograph while swimming off the coast of South East Australia near the township of Ulladulla. This particular wave comes out of relatively deep water and breaks onto a shallow rock shelf, creating a strong and powerful wave formation. When it is aligned with sunlight, it can become a striking subject to document.
